About Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension, also known as PH for short is a rare condition that causes high blood pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and the lungs.

In a healthy cardiovascular system, the right side of the heart pumps blood into the lungs and gathers oxygen-rich blood, which is pumped around the body by the left side of the heart.

However, the cardiovascular system of a person with PH is different. The walls of the pulmonary arteries become stiff and thickened or blocked by blood clots. Because of this, it is difficult for them to expand and trying to pump blood through these arteries puts increasing strain on the right side of the heart.

The hearts’ job of pumping blood into the lungs to pick up oxygen which is then circulated to every cell in the body and becomes a lot harder.
